NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Police have identified the pedestrian who was killed Wednesday morning following a crash.
Chris Amos with the Norfolk Police Department said the crash occurred just before 6:30 a.m. in the area of West Balview Avenue and Mason Creek Road.
Police said Benjamin Jacobs Kunkel, 25, was jogging across Tidewater Drive when he was hit by a vehicle, suffering life-threatening injuries. Around 8 a.m., Amos said Kunkel had died.
Images from the scene showed a red Jeep Cherokee with damage to the right side of the windshield and running shoes in the street.
Amos said the driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and called 911.
"The driver probably missed him, wasn't paying attention. I know a vehicle has to yield for pedestrian traffic but somebody wasn't paying attention, obviously," said John Addison, a neighbor.
"They should put one of those push buttons there. That way people will cross," said another neighbor, Anya Uzzell.
Joanne Hodge also expressed concerns.
"The crossing guard has a hard time in the morning getting the kids across the street for school. I mean they really ought to do something about it. The intersection is just out of control. It's not a surprise to me. It's a hazard trying to cross the street here. It's dangerous," said Hodge.
The Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney's Office will determine if any charges will be placed against the driver.
The crash remains under investigation.
