NEW YORK (WAVY) - The Mets are doing everything they can to make David Wright the National League's starting All-Star third baseman and you can help them.
Fan voting determines starters for the All-Star game.
As of now, Major League All-Star voting has David Wright starting next month's Mid-Summer classic, but the race is a close one. He has a slim lead over Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants.
Chesapeake's Wright is no stranger to the All-Star game; he's been there six times before, but this year is different. For the first time in 48 years, the New York Mets are hosting the Mid-Summer Classic at Citi Field.
Wright has better numbers than Sandoval this season. Wright has more home runs, more runs batted in and a higher batting average, but since the starter is determined by fan vote, Sandoval's popularity in San Francisco could push him to the top.
"He's just a special person that does things right. I don't know Pablo Sandoval, but I promise there is nobody better than David Wright and he needs our help, so get out and vote," said Virginia Wesleyan Baseball Coach Nick Boothe.
While Wright spends most of the year living in New York City, he still calls Hampton Roads home and has raised thousands of dollars for CHKD.
"He's are All-Star all the time. He wants to do things to help our community and thus he helps the kids at CHKD and this is a great way to thank him for that," said Karen Gershman with CHKD.
Wright's not the only local big leaguer on the ballot. B.J. and Justin Upton of the Braves, Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals and Micheal Cuddyer of the Rockies are all eligible for the Mid-Summer Classic as well.
Voting ends July 4. You can vote up to 25 times.
