NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A 15-year-old Delaware runaway has been arrested following a robbery and chase on Route 13 in Northampton County Tuesday.
Sheriff David Doughty, Jr. with the Northampton County Sheriff's Office told WAVY.com the incident began as an armed robbery at the U.S. Fuel on Route 13 around 3:30 a.m. The 15-year-old suspect robbed the store with a shotgun and fled in a dark vehicle, according to Sheriff Doughty. Store owner Lal Singh told WAVY.com the suspect got away with $698 and two Gatorades.
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police spotted the vehicle and began chasing it. Troopers and deputies joined.
Around 5 a.m., the suspect crashed the vehicle and pointed a gun at deputies and troopers, Doughty said. A deputy and a trooper fired their service weapons, but no one was hit.
About an hour later, the suspect gave up and was taken into custody. Charges are pending at this time.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police told WAVY.com a tactical team and a canine team assisted in the incident.
"The guy must have been desperate," said Aaron Price, a customer at the gas station. "I don't know desperate times with the economy the way it is and everything, but I don't know what made him think he was going to get away with it. You just don't get away with stuff like that, all the cameras and everything."
Chopper 10 above the scene showed a large presence of law enforcement officials, including sheriff's deputies and troopers about a mile north of the CBBT. The roadway was closed both northbound and southbound.
Around 6:53 a.m., the teen was taken into custody and placed into the back of an ambulance. Chopper 10 was able to catch the arrest on camera.
The southbound lanes reopened before 7 a.m. and the northbound lanes reopened by 7:15 a.m.
