GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WAVY) - Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is building an aircraft carrier in honor of the 38th president, Gerald R. Ford, and several events were held over the weekend to commemorate what would have been President Ford's 100th birthday.
A model of the Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier (CVN 78) was unveiled inside the atrium of the Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Mich. this past weekend.
"We are proud to be building CVN 78- named for a man who embodied integrity, honor and courage," said NNS President Matt Mulherin during a wreath-laying ceremony Sunday.
Shipbuilders participated in the wreath-laying ceremony. Four wreaths were laid -- one on behalf of President Barack Obama, one on behalf of the Ford family, one from the NNS shipbuilders and one from the CVN 78 crew.
The aircraft carrier will be christened November 9 at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Susan Ford Bales, President Ford's daughter and the ship's sponsor, will perform the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the bow during the ceremony.
