VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Fourth of July is less than a week away, and there was already patriotic pride on display in several Virginia Beach neighborhoods Friday.
Friday morning Virginia Beach State Senator Jeff McWaters and dozens of volunteers went to more than a dozen neighborhoods and put more than 8,000 flags next to mailboxes. The event was called "McWaters Inaugural Flag Extravaganza" and it aimed to celebrate the coming 237th birthday of the U.S.
"I think it's going to be great -- you look down those long neighborhood streets before the Fourth of July and see the great red, white, and blue blowing in the breeze. I think it will be a lot of fun and people will really enjoy it. I think people will appreciate it," said McWaters.
The group met at Norfolk Christian Academy's Virginia Beach campus on Laskin Road around 8 a.m. for a rally before they distributed the flags across the 8th Senatorial district.
"Our community, the flag, what our community represents around the world in terms of liberty, freedom -- it doesn't get any better than living here in Virginia Beach and being a part of this great nation," McWaters said. "These flags represent that. It's a small token, a small reminder to the men and women in the military here how much we support them and how much we love them."
Senator McWaters told 10 On Your Side he hopes to make this an annual event.
