VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Saturday marks one year since a Navy fighter jet crashed into the Mayfair Mews apartment complex in Virginia Beach.
Although 64 units were either destroyed or damaged, no one was killed or even seriously injured.
Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms remembered looking through his office window and seeing large, black smoke coming from the area of the crash.
"In my conversations earlier in the day and frankly late into the evening with the governor and with Admiral Harvey, I was telling them I don't see how we can't have some fatalities," Sessoms said.
Mayfair Mews residents like Pat Cavanaugh said the event impacted them heavily.
"It's something that impacted and will impact our lives for a long time," Cavanaugh said. "We'll never forget, but we have to move on and we're doing that."
