VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A man was shot at the Jason's Deli near Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach Sunday afternoon and officers have a suspect in custody.
Reginald Eugene Whidbee, Jr., 32, of Virginia Beach was arrested Sunday evening and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police responded to the 4500 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard after receiving reports of a shooting around 2:30 p.m.
A witness who did not want to be identified told WAVY's Lauren Compton the shooting suspect and a woman entered Jason's Deli together. A few minutes later, the woman walked outside with some ice for a young boy who was sitting in her car.
Then, the witness said the woman yelled, "That's him! That's him!"
"I came out of the mall and heard the woman yelling," said the witness. "I didn't know what was going on so I went back to see if I could help."
That's when the witness said she heard gunshots.
"The next thing I heard was a 'pop, pop' noise," said the witness. "I decided to go back to my car because I had two teenagers in the car."
Police said the suspect shot a man on the patio at the Jason's Deli.
Employees inside Jason's Deli said they ducked for cover when they heard the gunshots.
"Me, and some customers went to the back, an alleyway area behind the mall," said Jason's Deli employee Brittany Ward. "It was surprising. It was obviously unexpected. We're all okay so I'm thankful for that."
The witness said after the shooting, the woman and the suspect got into her car and took off.
"I was just scared, just scared," said the witness. "I knew it was a gun, but I didn't know which way it was pointing. People get shot all the time accidentally. I just wanted to get out of harm's way."
Police said the victim is in the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
