VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A house was struck by lightning in Virginia Beach near Shore Drive Monday evening, sparking a fire. It started in a condo in 2300 block of Kingbird Lane.
"It shook the whole house," said Virginia Beach's Anne Christian. "I have nothing to compare it to. It was a sound I wasn't use to hearing."
But it is a sound Christian will never forget. She was at home alone when the storms moved through.
"I felt like the storm was literally sitting directly on top of us," Christian added. "You would see the lightning outside and then not even two seconds you would instantly hear the thunder."
Christian says then came that house-shaking boom.
"I thought lightning must have hit right behind the house then I started hearing the fire alarms going off," Christian said. "I smelled smoke. I went outside and I looked up. Literally the flames were coming out of the side of the house."
Fire crews saved the home, but there is plenty of damage inside. Most of the damage is from the water used to put out the flames.
She was able to get her dog and cat out safely.
"It's going to be fine," Christian said. "We have insurance. We have things that prepare us for this. Everything's ruined, but it is all just stuff."
The fire call was reported at 4:40 p.m. and fire crews had it under control in about 45 minutes, according to Brian Taylor with the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
