VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A gas leak in the Town Center area of Virginia Beach caused the evacuation of several buildings and closure of busy streets.
According to Chief Brian Taylor with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, a construction crew hit a Virginia Natural Gas supply line at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Town Center Drive and Columbus Street.
Taylor said the leak from a 4-inch line was secured at 4:45 p.m.
All roads in and out of Town Center from all directions were blocked for about an hour between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., including access from Constitution Drive, Virginia Beach Boulevard and Independence Boulevard.
Buildings and areas within 100 and 300 feet of the construction site were evacuated for precautionary reasons.
The buildings that house Saffron restaurant, Verizon and BB&T were impacted by the evacuation. The entrance and exit to the parking garage was blocked as well.
Amy Valdez with the Virginia Beach Fire Department said strong winds are blew the gas smell towards Interstate 264 and Mount Trashmore.
She said there have been no injuries.
