VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - If you've ever been to Chick's Beach, chances are you've seen it. The Boat House has been around for years, now it's time has come to an end.
For more than 20 years, Tom Treesh has been adding "boat" features to the front of the home built by his grandfather. His home has become a community landmark, but recently it has run into rough seas.
When WAVY.com first met Treesh earlier this year, he was giving tours of his nautical themed home – all while trying to save it. The City of Virginia Beach says the home is violating a list of codes, easements and variances.
"They want me to do away with a whole lot of the stuff I've been doing; artwork, mosaics..." Treesh said.
The City Council voted on the property Wednesday night.
"They had a vote on taking everything away … and it passed four to three,” said Jerrie Delozier, Treesh's girlfriend.
The vote means it all has to go – from the lifeboats sign across and up to the street. Treesh has spent a lifetime making his home and seeing it come down won’t be easy.
"Being here and doing this is like building a sand castle at high tide," he said. "I spent hours building a sand castle and ... you sit there long enough and watch the tide come in and wash it all away."
Treesh has a month to take his home apart, and it won’t be cheap.
"We hope that if we sell off some of the nautical antiques, we might be able to offset some of the cost,” Delozier said.
But for Treesh, the cost is already too high.
“Breaks my heart,” he said.
