VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The threat of bad weather caused Neptune Festival officials to cancel Saturday night's fireworks, but Sunday ended up being picture perfect.
Although the scheduled 9 p.m. fireworks were called off, the rest of the evening's activities were held as planned. The musical headliners were scheduled to take the stages at 9:30 p.m., including The Smithereens at 31st Street, DEJA at 24th Street and Old Dominion at 17th Street.
Also, the North American Sandsculpting, under the big, dry tent, remained open until 11 pm.
Gold Medal gymnast Gabby Douglas took part in Saturday's Neptune Festival parade down Atlantic Avenue. Joining Gabby was Olympic boxing coach Gloria Peek, who coached the U.S. women's boxing team to gold and bronze medals.
Despite the weather Saturday, the festival was packed Sunday with folks enjoying the beautiful weather.
"The weather is absolutely awesome," Johnny Walker told WAVY.com "Virginia Beach is notorious for having the strangest weather but today it came out really great. We checked the weather beforehand and it said it was going to be 73 degrees and I just love it. I absolutely love it."
