PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A man shot by police was released from the hospital Tuesday and was charged with attempt capital murder.
According to Portsmouth Police spokeswoman Jan Clark, officers were called out to the 4300 block of Twin Pines Road the morning of March 17. The investigation revealed James Artis Jr. had entered his neighbors' home and stabbed them both, Clark said.
The female victim, 64-year-old Joan Sherman, managed to hide in her attic until police arrived, her nephew told WAVY.com. Both Joan and her 73-year-old husband were transported to the hospital for treatment. They will both recover from their injuries, police said.
Officers entered the home and confronted Artis Jr. At some point, one of the officers fired his weapon, hitting Artis. The officer was placed on administrative leave. Clark said criminal and administrative investigations into the incident will be conducted.
Artis Jr. has been charged with attempt capital murder but there are additional charges pending, according to police.
His previous convictions include felony robbery, use of firearm, assault, fraud and petit larceny.
