PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A 60-year-old Portsmouth man is accused of killing his 19-year-old nephew.
Portsmouth police detectives were called to the 3700 block of Magnolia Drive at approximately 11:20 p.m. Sunday following several reports of shots fired.
Officers arrived to find a gunshot victim on the rear steps of the home. He had been shot in the head, according to police spokesperson Jan Clark. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died a couple hours later. Police have identified the victim as Michael Devante Smith.
Police took the victim's uncle, 60-year-old Dennis Smith, into custody. Smith has been charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Detectives determined Smith and his nephew had been arguing and that argument escalated into gunfire. There were reportedly several people at the home at the time of the shooting.
Smith and the victim both lived at the Magnolia Drive home.
