NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Two swimmers were rushed to a hospital after a beach rescue in Ocean View Thursday evening.
Norfolk dispatchers reported two near drownings around 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chesapeake Bay in the 1300 block of East Ocean View Avenue.
Captain Hicks with Norfolk Fire and Rescue told WAVY.com a man was in the water of the Chesapeake Bay and began to struggle when a second man entered the water to assist him and began to struggle as well.
When Norfolk police and fire-rescue workers arrived, both men were laying on the beach. Hicks said he had no information about how the men got out of the water and onto the shore as of 9:45 p.m.
WAVY.com spoke to a fisherman who said he saw the friends in the water and then he saw one in trouble.
"They were out there horse playing around a little bit," said the witness. "I just happened to look down the beach and I see one of his buddies dragging him in, and at the time, I thought it was still horse playing, but then he got him down on the beach part and started pumping his chest, and that's when I dropped my pole and [ran] down the beach, and I said 'is everything alright?' He was like 'help, help,' and my son come running behind me. We got up on the kid, and he was foaming out the mouth and nose."
Responding medics to both men to Bon Secours DePaul Hospital because the facility has a Hyperbaric chamber, used to supply oxygen to the body.
Hicks said one of the men received life-threatening injures.
