NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Police have released the name of the victim of a possible drowning in Norfolk.
According to spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson, the man who died in the water in the 1000 block of East Ocean View Avenue Thursday evening was 47-year-old John Langston.
Battalion Julian Williamson with Norfolk Fire-Rescue said that units responded to a victim of a drowning around 5:30 p.m. after people on the beach reported seeing a man's body floating in the water.
By the time responders arrived, several Good Samaritans had rescued the victim from the water and were performing CPR.
A witness told Karen Parker-Chesson with the Norfolk Police that the victim was struggling to walk out of the water when he fell down and went under. He was pulled to shore soon after.
"This young kid came up to us and said ‘hey, there's someone floating out there in the water that hasn't come up for air,'" said Jim Castaneda, who pulled the victim from water.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue crews took over care of the victim and provided advanced cardiac life support.
Parker-Chesson told WAVY.com Langston was taken to DePaul Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"I was up on that balcony looking down and noticed that they pulled a man out and were giving him CPR," said Donald Swank, who called 911. "It was pretty scary because you could kind of tell there wasn't much hope for him, it was kind of too late."
An investigation into Langston's death continues.
