NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Police are investigating an undetermined death along East Bute Street early Tuesday morning.
Karen Parker-Chesson with the Norfolk Police Department said officers received a call just after 6:15 a.m. for a report of a male gunshot victim in the 400 block of East Bute Street. Illinois D. Johnson, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene.
WAVY crews on scene said Johnson was located on the steps of First Baptist Church.
"It's normally a rather safe area," said Pastor Dr. Robert Murray with the church. "Downtown not as people might think. It's just unfortunate it happened."
