NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Bo Jiang, the Chinese National accused of lying to federal agents pleaded guilty Thursday in Federal Court in Newport News.
Jiang had been charged with a felony lying to Federal Agents, but he plead guilty to a misdemeanor, downloading copyrighted TV shows, movies, and sexually explicit materials for personal use from a NASA contractors laptop.
He was given 48 hours to leave the country.
Jiang was a contractor at the National Institute of Aerospace and had been working at NASA Langley Research Center . He caught the attention of authorities when he took a government computer to China on a recent visit. He returned, and was then detained at Dulles International Airport when agents asked him what electronic devices he had, and he failed to mention he had an additional laptop, old hard drive, and a SIM card.
Authorities thought he was taking secrets back to China, but critics argue the Feds over-reached. Jiang speaks broken English, and believe he likely did not understand what he was being asked. He did turn over a cell phone, memory stick, external hard drive, and a new computer.
The Feds examined what he had, and found no evidence of spying.Chi
