SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - The man who was the center of a manhunt issued Tuesday in Sussex County is now in police custody.
Deputy Derrick McKenzie with the Sussex County Sheriff's Office told WAVY.com a manhunt for Dorel Pickett, a 33-year-old man from New Jersey, began Tuesday morning near exit 31, the Stoney Creek exit, on Interstate 95 in Sussex County.
Around 6 a.m., a vehicle Pickett was driving was stopped by police for speeding on I-95 in Sussex County. A large amount of drugs was found in the vehicle, and a passenger was taken into custody, but Pickett escaped capture by fleeing from the vehicle on foot and scaling a nearby fence.
Deputies believed Pickett was in a wooded area and set up a perimeter in that area on Galley Road in Sussex Co. at Route 301. The manhunt was suspended around 8 p.m. due to weather conditions, but deputies continued to patrol the area.
McKenzie said that Pickett was captured by deputies Wednesday at around 1 p.m. underneath the Rowanty Creek Bridge in Prince George on Route 301.
Police had received a couple calls reporting sightings of Pickett walking along Route 301 in the woods. He had been hiding under the bridge and probably spend the night there, according to McKenzie.
One of the K-9's that searched for Pickett bit him.
Pickett was taken to Sussex County jail without bond and was charged with possession to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin, transporting narcotics across state line, and obstruction of justice.
Deputies seized 548 grams of heroin -- in excess of $100,000 dollars in street value -- and 15 grams of crack cocaine, worth about $2,000.
McKenzie said that as far as the sheriff's office was aware, Pickett was not armed.
The passenger in Pickett's vehicle that was taken into police custody Tuesday was 46-year-old William Walton of South Carolina. He has been charged with possession to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin, and transporting narcotics across state line. Walton was also taken to the Sussex County Jail without bond.
The vehicle Pickett and Walton were in on Tuesday was a rental vehicle.
