NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 29-year-old woman has been charged with murder after her brother was stabbed to death during an argument Sunday.
Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley said officers responded to a stabbing call in the 700 block of 21st Street around 7 p.m. They arrived to find Bryan Garnett, II, 25, of Richmond suffering from a stab wound.
Medics took Garnett to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead about an hour later. Officers took the victim's sister, Latoya Nicole Garnett of Newport News, into custody for questioning.
"Having interacted with her, I really don't believe that was her character," neighbor Patti Richardson said. "I can just imagine how she must feel sitting in jail after having acted out in such a way to take a life, especially the life of a brother."
Early Monday morning, Eley said Latoya Garnett was charged with second degree murder in connection to her brother's death.
Eley said the preliminary investigation indicates Bryan Garnett was in town visiting his sister when they got into an argument and he was stabbed.
Latoya Garnett remains incarcerated at the Newport News City Jail.
