HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton Police have identified the victim who was fatally shot Friday morning in the 300 block of Greenbriar Avenue.
Cpl. Mary Shackelford with the Hampton Police Division said a call came into police communications shortly after midnight in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a female victim in a front yard with gunshot wounds to her upper torso.
The victim was identified as 29-year-old Michelle Williams. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
WAVY.com has learned Williams had a 13-year-old daughter. Family and friends placed a cross, flowers and stuffed animal in the yard where she was found dead, many of them crying and thinking back to how recently they spoke to her and saw her.
"She sent me something on Facebook, like some type of funny thing or funny stuff you post on Facebook," said Alonzo Lewis, Williams' friend. "And then I get the call this morning and she got shot in the chest."
10 On Your Side's Deanna LeBlanc spoke with Thomas DeBraux, the neighbor who called 911. He said that because of his military training, he went into reaction mode as soon as he heard shots fired.
DeBraux said he immediately called 911 to report the shots, then went outside to check on the victim. DeBraux then called 911 again to provide police with more information. He said he is still a little shaken by the ordeal.
"Hopefully everything goes back to normal, but after something like this, what can you consider normal?" DeBraux asked. He and other neighbors said they've rarely had any problems on their street.
"We had some trouble some years back, but they cleared the area out, got rid of that. It's a good area. Lots of families around here with children, school age, and it's just sad to see something like this happen," DeBraux said.
At this time, police have not released a motive or suspect information.
Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or text your tip to 274637 (CRIMES). The text message should include "HAMPTONPDTIPS" plus your tip.
This is Hampton's 19th homicide in 2013, the first since the new Chief of Police Terry Sult started on Oct. 7.
