NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say the roommate of a 58-year-old man found dead in a rooming house has been arrested on second degree murder charges.
Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department said a friend 58-year-old Kenny Armistead deceased in a rooming house in the 600 block of 27th Street just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.
McPherson said Armistead suffered trauma to the head.
Police were initially investigating the incident as a homicide, but later downgraded it to "suspicious death." The cause of death was changed back to homicide Tuesday afternoon, after a suspect was placed in custody in connection with the incident.
Elter Devale Ward, 54, was charged with second degree murder.
Neighbor Alesia Bradshaw told WAVY.com Armistead was "a nice guy, very pleasant, neighborly and didn't bother anybody."
McPherson noted Armistead's death marks the fourth murder in Newport News in 2013.
