JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A 73-year-old man has been charged with abduction after a neighbor claimed he tried to drag a small child toward his home Wednesday.
According to Maj. Steven Rubino with the James City County Police Department, officers received a call about an attempted abduction in the 900 block of Foley Drive around 3 p.m. Wednesday. The caller told police her neighbor was yelling at two small children in her front yard and attempted to drag her 3-year-old grandson across the street to his home.
The witness said she heard the child yelling, went out and confronted the suspect, identified as Barry Lee Hale, who left the area in a taxi. Rubino said the taxi was waiting in Hale's driveway.
Hale was arrested not long after and charged with abduction of a child, assault and battery and trespassing.
Police have not said what Hale was reportedly yelling at the children for. Rubino said it is unclear why Hale would try to take the child and he "may have been somewhat confused at the time."
