NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - City leaders joined the community in Newport News for the Feeding 5000 Thanksgiving Harvest and Community Celebration.

State and city leaders served food at the farmers market on Jefferson Avenue and say it’s a great way to meet people in the community.

“It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community,” Newport News Police Chief James Fox told WAVY.com. “We served them, so why not serve them food on Thanksgiving. They’re a lot of people that this really helps out. It’s good for the people, it brings people in need who have a great Thanksgiving dinner.”

Organizers say the celebration is a chance for the community to come together as one.
