PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Fat snowflakes fell across the area Saturday, a far cry from the warm weather just a day before.

The Super Doppler 10 weather team has been working hard to track the line of winter storms moving through. The precipitation began as rain and quickly moved to a mix before finally changing over to snow.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation spent Friday night preparing for the winter weather to make sure roadways stayed clear and safe for motorists taking advantage of their weekend.

Some inland areas could see up to 4" of snow. Most cities in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore were expected to see an inch to 2" while the middle Peninsula and Northern Neck were expected to see about an inch. Northeastern North Carolina was expected to get about an inch to 2".

Much of the snow melted shortly after as rain mixed in.

Chief Meteorologist Don Slater said temperatures will fall during the overnight hours and may cause the roadways to become problematic. Officials are asking motorists to stay off the roadways Sunday morning if possible.

During the snowfall, several hundred Dominion Virginia Power customers lost power. The cause of the outage remains under investigation and has not yet been attributed to the weather.
