VB Sandy damage estimated at $5 mil

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach officials say the city sustained approximately $5 million worth in damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

The city's Water Resources Engineer Phillip Roehrs estimated the damage to the city's coastline.

"We're guessing that along all our beaches we lost a half million cubic yards of sand and the value to replace that is right at about $5 million," Roehrs said.

Before the storm, Virginia Beach had already contracted beach replenishment at the Oceanfront and Sandbridge. Chesapeake Beach will get replenished at a future date.

Bubba's Restaurant off Shore Drive got flooded during the storm but opened back up Monday evening. Tidal action is to blame but the restaurant made preparations before Sandy. 

"It was so much more the tides," manager Nora Conn said. "That's what really got us."
