NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In the wake of Hurricane Isaac’s destruction, the American Red Cross is asking for help.
Isaac has caused devastating flooding and wind damage in communities from Florida to Texas and into the Midwestern states.
The organization has sent 3,000 volunteers, including 10 from Hampton Roads. They plan to be there for several weeks.
Spokesman Rob Shapiro told WAVY.com a relief effort of this magnitude will cost the organization millions.
"We have expenses for giving people cleanup kits, shovels, rakes, tarps, disinfectants," Shapiro said.
The organization has already served more than 22,000 hot meals and put up nearly 5,000 people in shelters Thursday night.
Costs are growing by the hour and the organization is asking for donations.
You can donate by calling the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or online at www.redcross.org .
Donations can also be made by texting “RED CROSS” to 90999. This will automatically make a $10 donation.
Other relief organizations are also in the Gulf. Operation Blessing pulled out of Virginia Beach last weekend with several volunteers as well. Like the Red Cross, it depends on volunteer support.
While legitimate organizations such as these are busy helping, there are some scammers who will prey on those who wish to donate to victims.
