Parking garages open for storm

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - As Hurricane Sandy brings strong winds and rain through the area, several cities have opened up parking garages and elevated lots to keep residents' cars safe from the storm.

Portsmouth
Residents may park their cars at the following city garages at no cost starting 6 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 on the second floors and above:

  • County Street Garage (1st and 2nd floors only)
  • Harbor Court Garage (6'2" clearance)
  • Middle Street Garage
  • Water Street Garage
  • Vehicles should not be parking in 24-hour reserved, Harbor Tower, Police Department or Sheriff's Department sports.

Norfolk

  • Garages at Boush Street, Freemason Street, York Street and MacArthur Center Garages North and South will be open for free use Oct. 27 at 6 a.m. Tuesday Morning or until the flood waters recede
  • Old Dominion University parking garages C and D adjacent to Ted Constant Center and E next to the football stadium will open Saturday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
  • High elevation parking lots at Little Creek Elementary, Larchmont Elementary, Ingleside Elementary , Campostella and Blair Middle School are available for parking, but cars must be removed before schools open.

Virginia Beach

  • 9th Street and 31st Street garages will be open for free parking 11 p.m. Saturday though 6 a.m. Tuesday
  • Town Center garages are always open and free
  • 19th Street and 25th Street surface lots will be open to free parking during the same times, but they are not on higher ground
