Crews shut down Midtown Tunnel

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Midtown Tunnel is now closing in both directions as crews are putting the flood gates up for high water Monday morning.
The tunnel was open in both directions, though a pilot vehicle led traffic through the tubes, according to Elizabeth River Tunnels.
The tunnel, which connects Norfolk and Portsmouth, closed down Sunday night because of high water.
According to an Elizabeth River Tunnels news release, tunnel crews decided to close the tube just before 9 p.m., when weather conditions began deteriorating. It reopened 2 hours later, when the water receded.
Shortly before 7 a.m. Monday, the ERC said the tunnel was open and travel speeds were being regulated by a pilot vehicle leading motorists in both directions.
The ERC will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and tide cycles.

The Downtown Tunnel remained open Sunday without restrictions.
