NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) - As Hurricane Earl moved North, the evacuation order in parts of Dare County lifted, for people to asess the damage left behind on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The remnants of Hurricane Earl's wrath came in the way of waves and wind. In South Nags Head, water crashed against homes already condemned from other storms.

In Manteo, fierce winds raged on and off all night, causing minor flooding.

In the light of day, with heavier rains and still gusting winds, trees bowed under the pressure. Some snapped and fell into live power lines.

Across the causeway, between Manteo and Nags Head, Earl's gusts had no mercy on a gas station on South Virginia Dare Road. The winds ripped apart the store's awning and pulled the pumps from their stands.

Dominion Power crews were out on the job, even as the storm continued. Officials told WAVY.com they anticipated all customers with known outages would have power back by 6 p.m.

According to spokesman Chuck Penn, they anticipate that as evacuees return to their homes, they will discover more outages. If you have lost power or see downed lines, call 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357).
