Gov. McDonnell tells residents to prepare

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - As Hurricane Sandy continued her march toward the U.S. east coast Sunday, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell declared a State of Emergency and warned residents to be prepared.

During an afternoon press conference Sunday, Gov. McDonnell said, "We're just beginning to see some minor flooding in the Hamptons Road area. We're very concerned about the ponding of water that will no doubt cause problems with hydroplaning. That is just beginning as heavy rains move into the area. The National Guard has been called up: 415 at this time. I've just authorized a limit up from 500 to 750."

Virginia is expected to be just south of Sandy's landfall, but the state is forecast to see strong gusts of wind and a substantial amount of rain.
