EASTERN SHORE, Va. (WAVY) - Crews continue cleanup efforts along the Eastern Shore, and Rep. Scott Rigell spent some time Friday touring damaged areas by air.

The Virginia Department of Transportation worked to clear debris to allow access to the island town of Saxis and the Sanford area. During Hurricane Sandy, many residents couldn’t evacuate due to the tidal surge.

In addition to clearing roadways for residents and other emergency crews, VDOT crews also used their trucks to rescue a family of six trapped in their Sanford home.  They also helped hand out emergency supplies during the storm.

Rep. Scott Rigell took to the air Friday on a tour across the Eastern Shore. He landed in Chincoteague, meeting with several officials and touring damaged areas.

WAVY.com was along for the ride.

All roads in Accomack and Northampton counties are open, VDOT said.
