Potholes damage vehicles on I-264

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia State Police shut down a portion of Interstate 264 Friday afternoon to perform emergency pothole repairs.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are working in two of the four eastbound lanes from Brambleton Avenue to Broad Creek Bridge.

The following is the schedule for pothole repair this weekend according to Lauren Hansen with VDOT:

Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 (Day and Night):  

• I-264 east from Waterside Drive to First Colonial Road
• I-264 west from First Colonial Road to Waterside Drive

Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 (Day and Night):

• I-264 east from Waterside Drive to Laskin Road
• I-264 west from Laskin Road to Waterside Drive
• I-64 east from the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) to Indian River Road

Hansen told WAVY.com the goal is to get the pavement in better condition before the Monday morning rush hour.

Several motorists reported to WAVY.com that potholes on Interstate 264 got worse after the heavy rain moved through Friday in the area of Ballentine Boulevard through Military Highway. Several drivers reported flat tires and other damage to their vehicles.

The concrete on I-264 eastbound is "very old and needs constant maintenance" to keep it functioning for the motorists, said Hansen.

VDOT submitted a new contract in January for permanent concrete repairs on I-264 and expects it will be awarded in late February. Hansen said the project should begin in the Spring. Until then, VDOT says interstate maintenance crews will continue to apply temporary pothole patches.
