PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - WAVY News Sports Director Bruce Rader will be recognized as the 2013 Sports Person of the Year during a ceremony Tuesday in Portsmouth.
Rader will be recognized at the Sports Club’s 67th Annual Jamboree at the Renaissance Hotel. The jamboree will also feature Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky, Old Dominion University football coach Bobby Wilder, Old Dominion University quarterback Taylor Heinicke and University of Virginia field hockey All-American Paige Selenski.
“As a lifetime member of the Portsmouth Sports Club it is an honor to receive the Sports Person of the Year Award,” said Bruce Rader. “It is named after the late J. Herbert Simpson who brought me to my first Jamboree when I was a young sportscaster over three decades ago. This will make the evening even more special.”
Several high school athletes will also be recognized and eight scholarships totaling $28,000 will be handed out.
Rader has been with WAVY News for more than 30 years and began Bruce Rader Charities Foundation, which as raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Hampton Roads area.
