VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The chairman of the United Football League announced Saturday that the league was postponing the remainder of 2012 season until next spring.

UFL founder and chairman William Hambrecht made the announcement Saturday morning.

According to the Omaha Nighthawks website, each UFL team will play the remaining four games of the 2012 season and stage its championship game sometime next spring. The UFL would then return to a fall schedule later in 2013.

The UFL, in its fourth season, has teams in four cities including Virginia Beach, Las Vegas, Sacramento and Omaha. Each team has played four of its scheduled eight games this year.

David Canter, who represents players around the league, said players will be paid for games played and given money to return home.

For  weeks, WAVY.com has been sent statements from the UFL saying, "Amid rumors of what some are considering a financial crisis in the UFL, the Virginia Destroyers will play their game against Sacramento."

The Destroyers lost Friday night at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex 20-17 against Sacramento .

WAVY-TV has reached out the league offices and  President John Wuehrmann. We are waiting to hear back.
