NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - CBSsports.com is reporting that Conference USA is ready to add six schools in 2013, including Old Dominion University.
With SMU, Houston, Central Florida and Memphis moving to the Big East, Conference USA is ready to reload.
An official announcement has not been made, but could reportedly come by week's end.
Conference USA is led by the likes of East Carolina, Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane and Tulsa, to name a few.
Other expansion teams joining the Monarchs would be Louisiana Tech and Texas San Antonio from the WAC, along with Florida International and North Texas from the Sunbelt, and Charlotte from the Atlantic 10, according to CBS sources.
The report by CBSsports.com has not been confirmed by anyone involved in Conference USA, anyone from ODU or anyone from any of the other schools being mentioned.
Old Dominion University Sr. Associate Athletic Director Debbie H. White released the following statement to WAVY.com regarding this report:
"Recent reports of conference realignment across the country have heightened our attention to focus on one of the primary goals of our intercollegiate athletic strategic plan, which is to continually assess the changing landscape of Division I athletics. One of the primary roles of our athletic director, Dr. Wood Selig, is to understand and analyze the changing landscape and to position the University and its athletic programs for future success. Any decision regarding conference affiliation would require due diligence on the part of the University and athletics. There will be no further comments from the University at this time."
