NEW YORK (AP) - New York pitcher C.C. Sabathia gave up only one hit over eight innings to earn his major league-leading 19th win, and steer the Yankees to a 5-0 win over the Oakland Athletics in the American League on Thursday.
Sabathia (19-5) gave up a single leading off the second, but thereafter gave the A's nothing as New York completed a four-game sweep and opened a 1-1/2 game lead atop the AL standings.
Curtis Granderson hit a solo homer and a two-run shot as a replacement for Nick Swisher, who left after one inning because of a stiff knee.
Oakland starter Dallas Braden (9-10) left in the sixth inning with heat-related cramps, when trailing 1-0.
Tigers 10, Twins 9, 13 innings
In Minneapolis, Gerald Laird hit a solo home run in the 13th inning to lift Detroit over Minnesota.
Laird, who entered the game in the 11th inning, homered off Nick Blackburn (8-9).
Detroit's Jose Valverde (2-3) pitched a career-high three innings of relief.
The Twins led 7-3 going into the eighth and 9-8 in the ninth only to let both leads slip away. Their AL Central lead over the White Sox was cut to 3-1/2 games.
The Tigers left 15 runners on base and the Twins 10 in a game full of missed opportunities at the plate and blunders in the field.
Red Sox 6, Orioles 4
In Baltimore, Adrian Beltre homered to spark a five-run second inning as Boston downed Baltimore.
The Red Sox moved within 6-1/2 games of Tampa Bay in the AL wild-card race.
After missing his previous start with a sore back, Boston pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-4) gave up four runs in 5 2-3 innings and took the win.
Baltimore starter Brad Bergesen (6-10) gave up five runs, two earned, and issued a career-high five walks in 5 1-3 innings.
Indians 6, Mariners 3
In Seattle, Shin-Soo Choo drove in five runs with a bases-loaded double and a two-run home run to boost Cleveland to victory over Seattle.
Choo hit a fastball from Doug Fister (4-11) against the right-center-field wall in the Indians' four-run sixth to score all three runners without a throw.
He added his two-run shot in the ninth to match his season-high for RBIs. Choo leads Cleveland in home runs (16) and RBIs (68).
Indians starter Josh Tomlin (3-3) lasted six innings, allowing three runs and no walks.
