NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Only a couple hours before players were set to hit the court, Norfolk Public Schools announced a decision to postpone the Maury/Granby girls and boys basketball games.

According to a news release from the school system, the Nov. 30 games were postponed because Granby High School officials received information that a neighborhood conflict might flare up before or after the game.

Elizabeth Mather with Norfolk Public Schools said Granby High School principal Ted Daughtrey was approached by students about the conflict. Daughtrey then met with representatives from the Norfolk Police Department, who increased their presence at the school Friday and decided to postpone the games.

In an effort to keep all students and spectators safe, the girls' basketball game will now be played on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Maury at 5 p.m. The boys game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to school spokeswoman Elizabeth Mather.

In early October, Norfolk school officials moved varsity football games to Saturday afternoon s following the shooting death of a high school student after a Friday night game.
