Lin's Aunt cheers from Hampton Roads

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - When the NBA's overnight sensation, Jeremy Lin, hits the court with his New York Knicks, he has a big fan base watching in Hampton Roads.

The league's first American-born player of Taiwanese or Chinese descent is making headlines all over the world. The undrafted, Harvard educated point guard is one of the biggest stories in sports right now. In a matter of seven games, Jeremy Lin went from being unemployed to the 5th string point guard of the Knicks.

He has led the Knicks to six straight wins. Tuesday night he scored 27 points and made a game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer to lead New York to victory over Toronto.

Watching from home in Virginia Beach was Jeremy's Aunt Betty Lu. She runs Dance Sport Virginia off Princess Anne Road.

She watched her sister's son grow up and has watched his basketball career explode. But she says Tuesday night's game-winning shot was not the one she will always remember.

"I couldn't believe my eyes, but he always has that thing for him, there was one game when he was at Harvard, against William & Mary and it was three overtimes and he hit the shot to win by one," recalls Betty Lu.

A devout Christian, Lin is already being compared to Tim Tebow. Lin has become an instant international pop-culture star, who weeks ago was sleeping on his brother's couch.

"I'm over my head, I'm really proud of him; I'm really happy for him. It's really odd, being an Asian American and an Ivy leaguer, it just doesn't fit, but he got it going and he has put an impact everywhere he goes, just incredible, I'm really proud of him," said his very proud Aunt.

Betty Lu won't be at the Dance Studio Monday night. She's planning to fly to New York to see her nephew play in person at Madison Square Garden.
