NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Eastern Region High School Basketball Tournament is one of the most popular sporting events in Hampton Roads each year.
Thousands of fans turn out at Norfolk Scope to watch hoop action at its best.
On Monday night, the boys and girls champions were crowned as they moved on to represent the Hampton Roads area in the state tournament.
By virtue of their victories in the semi-finals Sunday, the boys teams from Great Bridge and Kecoughtan had already stamped their ticket to the states. But considering that Great Bridge had not advanced this far in the tournament in 55 years, it would be interesting to see if the Wildcats could muster one more win and become regional champions.
The player of the game was Great Bridge's Steven Bee-Line, with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. The Wildcats won the AAA Easter Region Tournament 64-55.
Great Bridge plays John Marshall at on Friday at ODU and Kecoughtan will play Henrico on Thursday at VCU.
Three years ago, the girls from Lake Taylor and Princess Anne met in the regional championship game. Princess Anne won, and advanced to the state title contest.
Monday night, these former state champions met again - Lake Taylor unbeaten (25-0), Princess Anne (27-1) in its sixth straight region final.
PA freshman Gadiva Hubbard had 22 points, 5 rebounds in another region title win for Princess Anne. That's their 10th region title and the team's fifth under coach Darnell Dozier as Princess Anne hands Lake Taylor its first loss of the season 55-48 to win the Hampton Roads title.
Princess Anne plays L.C. Bird Friday at ODU. L.T. travels to Richmond to play Highland Springs Thursday at VCU.
