Admirals split series

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Peter Holland and Kyle Palmieri each had 3-point nights and Frederik Andersen made 40 saves as the Norfolk Admirals (6-2-0-0) topped the Binghamton Senators (4-4-1-0), 4-2, on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Admirals now embark on a four-game road trip beginning Wednesday morning against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

18-year-old defenseman Hampus Lindholm, a first-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks last June, netted his first American Hockey League goal. Andersen improved to 3-1-0 on the season with his 40-save effort.

The Admirals tied a franchise record with a 26-shot first period, outshooting the Senators 26-8, while taking the lead.

Lindholm picked off a pass at the left point and skated towards the circle. He then sent a wrist shot past the glove of goaltender Ben Bishop at 9:43 of the first period.

Norfolk’s lead doubled just over 7 minutes later. Palmieri attempted a shot from the right circle that went high and caromed off the glass behind the Binghamton net. The puck ricocheted back into the slot, and Holland sent a shot past an unsuspecting Bishop at 16:52.

The Senators drew to within one goal of the Admirals 3:10 into the second stanza. Andre Benoit sent a shot from the right half wall that tipped off the top of Andersen’s glove on its way into the net, making the score 2-1 in favor of Norfolk.

Holland’s second goal of the game restored the home team’s two-goal lead just over three minutes later. Luca Caputi sent a short pass from behind the Binghamton net to Holland on top of the crease. Holland one-timed the puck under Bishop’s legs at 6:25 for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

"Caputi gave me a great pass from behind the net," said Holland. "I just tried to whack at it and luckily for me it squeaked in."

Norfolk’s lead increased to 4-1 with Palmieri’s third goal of the season at 6:07 of the final frame. Holland intercepted the puck at the right point. He threaded a pass to Palmieri in the left faceoff circle for a one-timer past Bishop’s glove.

The Admirals bounce back for the win 4-2.
