NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - With 21 games remaining before the playoffs and three home games in the next four days, this is a perfect time for the Norfolk Admirals to move up four spots in the standings hoping to make the playoffs again. So what happened?
Talk about a run, the red hot Admirals have won 7 of their past 11 games heading into Wednesday night's game against the Checkers, seven points out of 8th--which is the final playoff spot.
Patrick Maroon just sent back down from Anaheim, tonight he was getting the crowd into the game with a fight right from the start.
Norfolk scored first, Devante Smith-Pelly netted his seventh goal of the year. Nate Guenin fed Smith-Pelly the puck and he fired it by Checkers goalie John Muse.
The Checkers tied the game at 1-1. Charlotte was able to take a 2-1 lead during a five-on-three power play goal in the second.
The Admirals tied the game on a power play goal of their own. Muse was able to stop Maroon's first shot, but not his second and his rebound tied the game at 2-2. His fourteenth goal of the season.
The Admirals started overtime on the penalty kill after a goaltender interference penalty was called on Luca Caputi with one minute remaining in regulation. Just 36 seconds in to overtime Charlotte's Mark Gragnani one-timed the puck through traffic for the game winner.
The Admirals are back at home against Hershey this Friday and Saturday.
