VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - While the object in golf is to post a low number, First Colonial golf coach Leo Anthony reached a very high number recently. Anthony reached 1,000 wins as a coach, 589 in golf and 411 as a basketball coach.
"It means a lot to me," Anthony said. "I didn't know that they could combine golf with basketball. I guess the VHSL keeps track of that stuff."
Anthony's success coaching both basketball and golf was spread over two schools. He got his start at Princess Anne High School and in 1972 Anthony decided to start coaching golf.
Prior to his coaching career, Anthony was a two sport star at Old Dominion University as a shortstop in baseball and shooting guard in basketball. A member of the ODU Hall of Fame, Anthony is the first Monarch player to have his number retired. He averaged 27 points a game while at ODU.
Long-time Princess Anne golf coach Hutch Hammond says Anthony is coaching for all the right reasons.
"He's a really nice guy and he really has the interest of the kids at heart, because I have been doing this for 31 years and he has been doing it a lot longer and we don't do it for the pay, so he does it for the love of the kids," said Hammond.
