CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - The University of Virginia says it's received a record 28,239 applicants for admission to the Class of 2016.

Total admission applications are up 18 percent from last year.

Forty-one percent of the total, 11,753 applicants, sought admission through U.Va.'s new early admissions program. University officials say 3,187 early admissions applicants will be accepted.

The early admissions program doesn't obligate students to enroll if they are accepted.

Overall, the School of Engineering and Applied Science had the most applications with 4,530. That's up 23 percent from 2011.

The number of international students seeking admission rose by 23 percent.

Dean of admissions Gregory W. Roberts says in a news release that university officials expected the total number of applicants to increase but not by this much.
