WAYNESBORO, Va. (WAVY) - When Waynesboro officers went to question a suspected DUI driver Sunday afternoon, they didn’t just smell alcohol, they also smelled skunk.
According to Sgt. Brian Edwards with the Waynesboro Police Department, a witness driving along Interstate 64 saw a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina strike a guardrail but did not stop. The witness reported the driver continued driving erratically.
Police found the suspect and his vehicle in a Plaza Azteca parking lot on Windigrove Drive around 2:30 p.m. Once officers approached the vehicle, driven by Efrain Moreno Alvarez, 40, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol and a strong odor of skunk, Edwards said.
Officers noticed a plastic bag hanging from the rear windshield at the back of the vehicle. Edwards said Alvarez performed sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for DUI. When he was asked about the bag, Edwards said Alvarez told police it was a skunk he had killed and he was trying to find a place to dispose of it when he was stopped by police.
According to Edwards, Alvarez’s blood alcohol content was .15.
