VERONA, Va. (AP) - A family dog is credited for discovering an envelope filled with stolen cash that led to the arrest of a Verona man.
The News-Leader reports 20-year-old Derek Shifflett turned himself in Monday night and was charged with robbery.
Augusta County sheriff's Sgt. David Lotts says Shifflett is suspected of posting a bogus car sales ad on Craiglist. After meeting with a prospective buyer on Monday, Shifflett allegedly took an envelope containing $12,000 in cash from the man's coat pocket and fled.
Lotts says a woman whose son is friends with Shifflett called police after her dog found the envelope underneath a bed and began playing with it.
It wasn't immediately known whether Shifflett had a lawyer. An Augusta County Jail shift commander was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.
