AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) - This might be one of those cases where DNA evidence can bring the evil doo-ers to justice.
A homeowners association in South Austin is considering using DNA to do to find out which pup is pooping on which lawn -- and which pet owners are not scooping the poop.
The Pointe is a small condominium complex made up of 31 units, mainly retired folks. Neighbors live in nice homes in peaceful streets with well-kept yards.
But behind the gates, homeowners said there's something smelly going on.
Martha Ross and her neighbors have lived in the community for years and were surprised when they received an email from the HOA president stating they will be required to give a sample of their dogs' DNA through their poop.
"I'm not in it and my little dog isn't in it and I think it's unfair to push to this point, " Ross said.
The email said dog droppings keep showing up in the common areas, that's why the board is pushing for DNA testing.
According to the DNA company " PooPrints ", it has a verbal agreement with the HOA to move forward with the testing and the HOA would be covering the $30 dollar fee per dog.
The HOA is requesting every dog in the neighborhood have their DNA taken and put on file, so when a mysterious mess is found they can have it analyzed to see who is the culprit.
Steve Round has lived in the community for seven years and said the HOA has taken things too far.
"It just seems everything is getting more and more micromanaged, " Round said. "When you start regulating people's dog poop, I think that is as far down the line as you can get. I don't know, maybe they'll start regulating our poop."
It was tough to find any neighbors who did agree with the HOA. Several said the policy would invade their lives too much.
KXAN sniffed around for an official comment but no one answered the door of the association's president, and a security guard asked a news crew to leave the property.
