VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Several congressmen representing Hampton Roads joined the Navy League, suggesting a plan to exclude defense cuts from the sequester.
Congressmen Scott Rigell, (R-VA), Randy Forbes (R-VA) and Rob Wittman (R-VA) each serve on the House Armed Services Committee. They spoke at the Navy League of Hampton Roads meeting in Virginia Beach, announcing a plan to exclude defense spending from sequestration.
"I think that many of the most horrific things we're hearing... we will be able to mitigate," Forbes said. "And that will come out with a continuing resolution that will have certain anomalies in it."
David Bergstein of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement criticizing Rigell’s decision to hold a press conference.
“Just one day after Republican Governor Bob McDonnell called on Republicans in Washington to ‘stop having press conferences and start meeting,’ to avert the sequester, what did Republican Congressman Scott Rigell do today? Hold another gimmicky press conference,” Bergstein said. “Congressman Scott Rigell should heed the words of his Republican governor and stop hiding behind press stunts – especially since Congressman Rigell voted last week to skip town and stop working instead of trying to avert this crisis which he helped create. When Congressman Rigell says one thing in Hampton Roads and does the exact opposite in Washington, it’s simply impossible to trust him with our country’s future.”
