Rescued boater found dead in NC

CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - A man rescued from his sailboat during Hurricane Irene has been found dead in Camden County, N.C. and investigators are treating it as a suspicious death.

According to Tony Perry with the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Calabrese, 49, of Norfolk was found floating in the water near his boat around 2 p.m. at Lamb’s Marina along Highway 158.

Calabrese had been docked in the marina since April 27 and was staying on his boat.

During Hurricane Irene in August of 2011, Calabrese was one of two people and a cat rescued from his distressed sailboat at Ninth View in the Willoughby area of Norfolk. The sailboat was about 400 feet off the beach.

Calabrese was arrested twice after the rescue ; both for offenses involved alcohol.

His death is being treated as suspicious and an autopsy will determine his cause of death.
