CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man accused of killing the daughter of a North Carolina police chief is pleading guilty to a lesser charge after prosecutors consulted with the victim's father.

Thirty-one-year-old Michael Harvey was sentenced Friday to between 7 and 9 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Harvey had been charged with murder in the 2010 overdose death of Valerie Hamilton.

Prosecutors say the 23-year-old Hamilton left a Charlotte bar with Harvey and the pair went back to his home, where they used heroin.

Her body was later found in a storage locker. Police said Harvey left her body there after she died and fled to near his boyhood home in Niagara County, N.Y.

Hamilton's father was formerly police chief of the Charlotte-area city of Concord.
