CHOWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) - An abandoned school went up in flames and an investigation is underway in Chowan County Monday night.
Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin with the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com fire crews received a call for a fire at White Oak School in the 100 block of Dillards Mill Road just before 8 p.m.
Someone passing by the school noticed smoke and flames.
Crews from Center Hill Crossroads, Belvedere and Edenton Fire Department all responded to the scene. Goodwin said the fire was through the roof and flames were visible. It took firefighters 45 minutes to contain the fire.
The school has not been occupied in 10 years. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the fire.
Goodwin said about an hour after the school fire, a vehicle caught fire about three miles from the school. That fire was confirmed an arson.
